In this article from 1954, we describe how Grimsby once had its very own Hall Of Science.RECENT years have seen the face of Freeman Street change considerably. New shop fronts have replaced former facades. Now the old Hall Of Science is in progress of being given a "new look".Probably only older Grimbarians will recognise the building by that name.To later generations, it is better known as the Central Billiards Hall, at the corner of Freeman Street and Duncombe Street. Its original name...

In this article, which was published in the Grimsby Telegraph in 1954, we pay a visit to Revesby.ONCE a model, spick-and-span country estate on spacious grounds, encircling one of the stately homes of England, Revesby in South Lincolnshire would now be called "quaint" by dollar tourists. The village which once produced a famous naturalist who went on Cook's expedition through the South Seas, still has charm and dignity, but it is changing now, almost against its will. The pleasant...

RECENTLY we published a photograph showing competitors in the RAC L-Driver Of The Year competition, which was sent in by Neil Maxfield.Neil explained that they did very well in the competition, which was held at the Beacholme holiday camp, but he "confessed" that Ron Colebrook wasn't actually his instructor, it was a man named Derek (possibly Baker but I'm not sure) who wasn't RAC-registered so he wasn't actually eligible to enter the competition.Neil added: "Ron was magic and...

Gales followed by tragedy

Our coastline is no stranger to the effects of storms and the devastation they can bring. This article, which appeared in the Grimsby Telegraph in 1954, takes us back to one such event in 1905.JANUARY 1905 came in with violent northerly gales. It was not long before there was a succession of lame ducks entering the Humber – cargo vessels and fishing craft battered by high seas and, even worse, some with reports of hands swept overboard or injured. Not only that, there was calamity nearer...
