MENTION 1947 to anyone who was around at the time and their thoughts turn immediately to snow drifts, frozen pipes, biting winds and huddling round a flickering fire trying to keep warm.It was the year that had that yardstick of all winters. The winter of mile-long snow drifts. The winter of trains stranded on blocked lines. The winter when the wind always seemed to come out of the east and bring fresh blizzards.People were marooned for days on end and even Grimsby Town's players were stranded...

Fighting back the sea

IT'S hard to believe that these two photographs show the same stretch of road. What we now know as Kingsway, Cleethorpes, was Sea Bank Road back in 1902 when the first picture was taken. Not that there was a sea bank. The sea had its own way in 1902.And those who dared to venture out at night ran the serious risk of being swept away by a hungry and insatiable sea.Erosion, well known today on the Yorkshire coast, was a nightmare with which Cleethorpes people lived uneasily. But when matters reached...

IT'S hard to believe that in one year alone 30 million herring were landed and processed on Grimsby Fish Docks. The trade in the "silver darlings" has all but disappeared from the port but once it was a major factor in the development of the town's fishing industry. You can read all about it in a fascinating article by local fishing historian, Tom Wood, in the 250th edition of Bygones. As usual, Bygones is crammed with all manner of nostalgia, from the birth of the Grimsby Amateur...

If you wanted to taste the wild side of life, no doubt you would head to an island in the Mediterranean, but back then the only option was somewhere like Butlin's holiday camp."This picture was taken at Butlin's in Filey, Yorkshire. DAVID Fitzgerald got in touch after seeing this photograph from South Parade School, Grimsby, in Bygones in December.David said: "I am one of the boys in the picture, which ironically was published the day before my 60th birthday."Most of our mothers and fathers went to war and returned to a land still in poverty for most, with rationing still going on."The school catchment area included the many terrace houses which were built around 1890, with no inside toilets or bathrooms, no...
