THE Alexandra Dock was once the hub of Grimsby's timber trade... but it was to become the first step to the breaker's yard for many of the port's elderly trawlers. In the 50s and 60s it was used to accommodate fishing vessels which had reached retirement age, which could be anything from 20 to almost 50 years. This particular photograph from our archives was taken from Marshall's Mill, looking across the dock towards the Top Town area. The timber yards were on the spot now occupied by Sainsbury's...

IT WAS 1948 before Grimsby and Cleethorpes got the benefit of Sunday morning buses. And even them some people were not happy with the service they were getting from the local transport concerns. In January that year a petition was handed in to the Grimsby Corporation Transport from villagers in Great Coates asking for a better bus service. At that time, they said, the only bus to serve Great Coates was provided by the Enterprise Passenger Service and it was, they said, "totally...

A GRIMSBY institution disappeared in the late spring of 1966, flattened by a bulldozer to make way for the town's controversial Cleethorpe Road flyover. The Barrel, one of the town's most famous public houses, finally closed on March 31 after being in the same family for 77 years. It was right opposite the Oberon and unbeknown to most people who frequented it over the years it wasn't called The Barrel at all... but the Exchange Hotel. Its popular name came from the barrel which hung outside for as...

FISH HouseFish House Lane was a thoroughfare which once ran from the corner of Columbia Road along what is now Ladysmith Road.It got its name from a series of fish huts erected for the drying of salted cod. They were known as "inkies," small wooden towers where the fish would be hung on racks to dry.Fish House Lane was a narrow, cobbled road which also housed the town's skating rink, a popular spot for the town's youngsters. There was an allotment site, later occupied by a Findus...

THE fight to save the crew of the trawler Howe stranded on the rocks of Bear Island, inside the Arctic Circle remains one of the greatest rescue operations in the history of seafaring. And it showed the close comradeship which exists between fishermen of all nationalities.Skippered by George McGregor (Russian George), the Howe, pride of the Grimsby fleet, had been driven ashore at 3.45am on November 19, 1931.The 15 soaked and shivering crewmen took refuge on the bridge as huge waves forced the...

HEADING out of town today on the A180 West Marsh Relief Road past acres of new cars, it's hard to imagine that 50 years ago various timber merchants had their premises close to the Alexandra Dock, writes Jeff Beedham.I remember Bennetts, Greens, Grimsby Timber Company, Hewson Chapman, Marshall Knott & Barker, AV Norths, Ogles and Wintringham & Son that had sawmills and cavernous open-sided drying sheds in which timber was left to season. The new Alexandra Dock was opened on July 22, 1879,...

I HAVE to say how much me and my workmates enjoy reading the Bygones in the Grimsby Telegraph and the Bygones paper too, writes Mark Tench. But most of all we enjoy reading stories by ex-deep water fisherman Michael Sparkes, because being an ex-North Sea trawlerman myself I enjoy reading about how things really were back in those heydays when my dad was at sea.Myself and my workmates would love to read more of Michael's stories.

Ships like the Boston Concord, Boston Boeing, Boston Weelsby, Boston Comanche and the Prince Phillip, to name but a few, were all outstanding vessels. But they had another big sidewinder that was exceptional, which I had the privilege of becoming bosun of for two...
